MAFA 24'Unit 2 Work
Banned Dog Breeds
In this ongoing body of work, I investigate my relationship with my feminity/womanhood through the lens of animalistic urges.
In line with Judith Butler’s writing on the performativity of gender, I believe womanhood to be a role AFAB people are taught from an early age, and long hair is often associated with traditional views on feminity.
In a protest, I cut my hair and created a wearable tail, in the hope of shifting the role I had been taught to perform.
Playfully Curious About My Desires
In this artwork, I created a digital collage, of my own body with a Photoshopped top surgery, the final product being a cardboard standee. Having my face removed I encourage the viewer to step in and take pictures of their own face being implanted into this trans body. I explored my fantasies of the desired physique by creating a body of mine, that does not exist in actuality, as well as demystifying, and bringing closer to the audience a body that is alien, and in some cases scary.
Hit Me Until You Break Me, and Everyone Starts Cheering
In this piece of work, I combined ‘Playfully Curious About My Desires’, with a brightly coloured pinata, to create an installation of implied violence. The hanging figure mirrors the one in the back, as a result both bodies have an expectation of breakage placed upon them. It is a piece exploring positionality of a queer body and aims to question what is granted to those who replicate the heteronormative structures already in place in Western society.
Has It Started Affecting Your Studies? On the Inconvenience of Suicidality
Please note that the audio work has been altered for artistic purposes, and does not reflect the full extent of support offered by various crisis centers.
In this installation work, I combine my graduation pictures, a golden medal, and an MP3 recording of a fragment of my call with a mental health crisis line.
I aim to destigmatize mental health conversation and tackle feelings of alienation, depression, and various anxieties one might experience in their journey, the intentions juxtaposed with the abruptness of the call and its content.
Mt. 7: 7-8
Mt. 7: 7-8 is an interpretation of experiences not my own, through the guidance of parishioners at St Saviours church in London, Pimlico.
I have created an anonymous questionnaire asking the church attendees to share any mediums that fill them with divine inspiration. The answers ranged from pieces of literature, sculptures, and architecture, to natural phenomena and more mundane experiences; using the answers provided I created a short video exploring a spiritual journey.
