"Apostasy" (London 2023)

"Apostasy" is a reconciliation between the artists' conservative heritage and queer identity. Having been raised in a strict religious environment in Poland, the artist explores the role of the Catholic church in the positionality of AFAB people. Religious iconography is reimagined using household items to point out tensions between the patriarchal narratives perpetuated by the church and feminist practice.

This short film conveys a tale of hypocrisy, hatred, abuse, and pain; mapping out violence and injustice that befalls the queer community in Poland. Through a combination of documentary footage from pride parades, official political statements as well as street interviews with the artist’s countrymen; the “Apostasy” narrative is contextualized. The structures of

power, responsible for the demonization of queer people, are dissected and scrutinized- the use of graphic footage highlights the reality of the continuous abuse of human rights. Alongside documentary footage, the artist provides an insight into their creative process and personal experiences on the matter.
